Economy

King Salmon welcomes over 30,000 visitors per year through its airport.  Being a major shipping point for Bristol Bay salmon, as well as the gateway to Katmai National Park, King Salmon serves as the transportation hub for the Bristol Bay area.  The state-owned airport offers an 8,500 foot paved, lighted runway; a 4,000 foot asphalt/gravel crosswind runway and FAA air traffic control tower.  Float planes may land on a 4,000 foot section of the Naknek River.  Cargo barges travel the river April-October.

The Bristol Bay red salmon fishery is the largest in the world.

Naknek River

Home to the most abundant run of wild salmon in the world. We chose it for it's versatility, easy access and quantity of fish. It is home to all 5 species of Pacific Salmon and 4 native freshwater species. The Naknek River is also home to the world's 3rd largest tides, so you get salmon "fresh from the sea" twice daily.

We fish a 20 mile stretch of the Naknek River. This includes: slow moving deep water, great for backtrolling; fast moving water with a gravel bottom and small pools, great for casting; and a few braids with islands, great for wading. 4 small tributaries flow into the Naknek and we fish them all from boat and from shore.

At the headwaters of the Naknek River is Naknek Lake. It is a very deep lake and the 4th largest in Alaska. The lake is home to char, lake trout, northern pike, and rainbow trout with great fishing at the far end of the lake(40 miles across). This can be an add-on fishing experience with remote camping and solitude. Availability is very limited by weather as the lake can kick up 8' waves. For the brave at heart, that want to experience the very last pristine wilderness while fishing...this is the spot. Additional cost: $300/day/person.

At the mouth of the Naknek River is Bristol Bay. The Bay is home to a $1 billion commercial fishery for sockeye salmon. The season runs only 8 weeks and the village of Naknek grows from 600 people to 16,000. It is a remarkable lesson in economics and survival.

Traveling to King Salmon

You can fly directly into King Salmon Airport (AKN) from Anchorage.  The airport is served by both Alaska Air and Peninsula Air.  You can usually reach King Salmon in one day from most East Coast departure points.  You should plan to arrive in King Salmon on Sunday afternoon, and depart on Saturday morning.  There are limited flights to and from King Salmon, and we have found that this schedule seems to work the best.  Plus, it allows for some sightseeing time in Anchorage.  The drive to Seward should NOT be missed!

The Weather

Always unpredictable, always changing.  You can enjoy a beautiful, warm, sunny day; only to experience rain, wind, and cold the very next day (or hour).  Be prepared for this.  Layering of clothes is recommended.  It generally feels cooler on the river than the general outside temperature.  Unless it's warm and sunny......   Then it feels warmer on the river than it does in town.
